AS SEEN IN Civil + Structural Engineering magazine (July 2020): California-based Pavement Recycling Systems purchases new mobile pugmill after successful lease trial for upcoming RCC projects.
After securing its first roller compacted concrete project, Pavement Recycling Systems identified the need for a mobile continuous mixing plant. After learning of a similar company’s experience with Rapid International’s Rapidmix mobile pugmill, they arranged to rent a plant on a trial basis. Having learned the capabilities of the Rapidmix plant during the successful lease trial, Pavement Recycling Systems made the decision to purchase a new mixing plant for an upcoming redevelopment project at the Port of Long Beach Middle Harbor as well as future planned roller compact concrete projects throughout the area.
Established in 1989, Pavement Recycling Systems is 100 percent employee owned company specializing in state-of-the-art recycling solutions to reclaim, preserve, and rehabilitate pavement at any stage. Their goal is to reduce the environmental impact of paving while simultaneously improving quality and reducing costs.
The Port of Long Beach Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project is an ongoing $1.2 billion project to upgrade two old container terminals at the port and conjoin them into one advanced and green terminal. The upgrades are being carried out on piers E, D, and F. The project will double the handling capacity of the two terminals and cut down air pollution by 50 percent.
To produce the mixture used for roller compacted concrete, Rapidmix receives aggregates from the plant hopper via a weighed conveyor belt along with a specified weighed amount of cement from the onboard silo. The materials are mixed in the onboard pugmill and loaded into truck using on outloading conveyor. The cement treated aggregates are loaded into compaction pavers and laid at 94 percent compaction; compacting rollers further compact the material to 98 percent compaction.
Shortly after being laid, roller compacted concrete is strong enough to support traffic and operations all the way to the edge of the step.
Fully mobile and self-contained, Rapidmix is a complete plant powered by its own power source with onboard compressor and generator. Fitted with a self-erecting hydraulic system, the plant can convert from travel mode to fully operational within a few hours. Available with outputs of up to 600 tons per hour, Rapidmix provides feed rates that fully adjustable for the aggregate, cement, and water systems.
Rapidmix mobile pugmills product controlled mixtures for utilization in a range of applications including roller compacted concrete, cement treated base, soil stabilization, soil cement, bentonite, marine dredging, mine backfill, and much more. The mobile nature of the plant combined with the technically advanced design is most advantageous in meeting the supply and demand requirements on projects. Rapidmix provides a cost effective solution for onsite projects where high specification compliance coupled with a high volume, fast throughput are essential.
